AIA Triangle received 73 project entries in this year’s Design Awards program. The submittals represented work from architectural firms throughout the Triangle region. These projects varied in scope from large institutional master plans to small house renovations. As always, the range of styles vary - from ultra modern to more traditional - highlighting the diversity and talents of the architectural expressions that are created within our area. The one common thread throughout all the projects is the high quality of the work presented in this program.

It is with great pleasure that the Design Awards Committee presents the 2004 AIA Triangle Isosceles Award to the RDU Airport Authority.

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport serves as a gateway to our region - giving travelers often their first impression of the built environment in the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area. Created by the General Assembly in 1939 as the Raleigh-Durham Aeronautical Authority and changing in 1945 to the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, which serves as the governing body for the airport. The RDU Airport Authority is responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of the airport.

Over the past several years the airport has experienced rapid growth. As a result of this expansion the Airport Authority has worked with many local architects and designers to create buildings that conjure up the images of flight and the high-tech nature of the Triangle region. Many of these projects have won state and regional design awards. This is not just the work of talented local designers, but a testament to the vision that the Authority has for the airport and the region and reinforces the adage that ‘good architecture cannot occur without good clients.’ The common thread through all the projects is the client.
